GTA6: Systems Confirmed, Numbers Withheld

Rockstar confirms hurricanes, 170-plus species and a map twice GTA5’s — then declines the gameplay numbers behind all three. Relays filled the gap.

Read Game Informer’s 382nd issue as a document rather than as a news dump, and one disclosure policy runs through all fourteen pages: confirm that a system exists, decline everything that would let a reader measure it. Weather is both the clearest case and the largest subject in the feature. Rockstar confirms that tropical storms and hurricanes appear in the game and describes what a full storm looks like. The same reporting records the boundary — Game Informer does not say how often hurricanes occur, or whether they play any part in missions or the story — and 游侠网’s relay, published in the early hours of 30 September, repeats the boundary in its own words. The existence is on the record. The rate is not.

The pattern holds down the rest of the contents list, which is what makes it a policy rather than an oversight. The map is confirmed at around twice the size of GTA5’s, with Aaron Garbut, Rockstar North’s co-studio head and head of development, quoted doing the confirming — and he redirects the question to interiors and density rather than to square miles, which are never given. Wildlife is confirmed at more than 170 species, over 60 kinds of bird and more than 30 land mammals, with the rarity system returning from Red Dead Redemption 2, which sorts animals into rare, discoverable and legendary — and Rockstar is withholding the identities of the legendary ones. Vehicle theft is confirmed to be tiered, with some cars taken in the ordinary way, others needing specialised tools and expensive ones carrying security systems and trackers — and no list of which is which. Robberies are described as solo or duo and quiet or loud, with how far a situation escalates determining the police response — and no escalation table.

The one figure in the whole set a player can act on is a count the studio has never published before. More than 170 animal species is the first population number Rockstar has attached to a GTA world; there is still no pedestrian count, and no square mileage for any of its maps. It is also a content inventory rather than a performance figure: a species list is a statement about how many models, behaviours and animations were built, which is precisely the kind of claim an art team can make safely 51 days out. Florida’s real vertebrate fauna is several times larger than 170, so the number is a production budget, not a simulation of the state. The relays have already drifted on it — several carry “more than 170”, at least one carries “almost 200”, and the larger figure is not in the feature.

There is a control case in the same issue showing the holding back is not blanket secrecy. Where the subject is travel rather than simulation, the feature describes the mechanism in full. Fast travel runs through the ride-share app RydeMe, which this site already recorded from the July briefing; what the issue adds is that a trip is not a loading screen. You can talk to the driver and to other passengers sharing the ride, listen to radio stations carrying new licensed music, and scroll the in-game social feed on the phone while the car moves. Nothing is withheld there, because the player experiences all of it. Weather, wildlife, theft and robbery are simulations, and a simulation sells on what you find inside it — so the intent is published and the parameters are not.

One confirmation in the issue lands directly on a failure mode this site set out on 24 September. That piece joined a late-August report that money gates progress in the main story to an on-record remark from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson that cash carried on the character is lost if you are killed, and concluded that a player could clear a money threshold, be killed before reaching an ATM, and find the story closed behind a door they had already opened. The gating half rested on a single report. The issue now states that certain missions can be affected by how much money Jason and Lucia have available, which is an independent second source for the mechanism — and it draws the same boundary as everything else. Not how much, and not which missions. The system has been confirmed twice and its amount has been published by nobody.

That is why the retelling deserves reading against the document, because a withheld number invites a supplied one. The neatest example is the “80-hour main story — double the length of GTA 5’s” that one outlet attributes to the issue: the 80 hours is not new and is not a main-story measurement, it is Nelson’s own playthrough with optional content included, and it predates the issue. Summary pages compiled from other outlets go further still, asserting that a PC version is “confirmed to follow shortly after” and that the studio is targeting a late-2026 window with analysts pointing to 2025, when Rockstar has announced no PC version and no date other than 19 November 2026. The rule worth carrying into the next issue: when a document confirms a system and declines its magnitude, treat every number in the retelling as unattributed until it turns up in the document.
