GTA6 Online: Multiplayer Expectations & What We Know

While Rockstar Games has not officially detailed the multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto VI, the success of GTA Online — which has generated billions in revenue since 2013 — makes a GTA6 online mode virtually certain. This guide covers what we know, what to expect, and how GTA6's multiplayer might evolve from GTA Online.

GTA Online: The Precedent

GTA Online launched on October 1, 2013, two weeks after GTA5's release. It became one of the most successful multiplayer games in history:

  • Revenue — GTA Online has generated over $8 billion in microtransaction revenue since launch
  • Content updates — Rockstar released over 40 major content updates over 13 years, adding heists, businesses, vehicles, and game modes
  • Player base — At its peak, GTA Online had millions of concurrent players across platforms
  • Businesses & properties — Players could purchase nightclubs, arcades, casinos, and criminal enterprises
  • Vehicles — Hundreds of cars, aircraft, boats, and military vehicles were added over the years

GTA Online set the template for what a live-service open-world multiplayer game can be. GTA6's online mode is expected to build on this foundation.

What to Expect from GTA6 Online

Based on Rockstar's patterns and industry analysis, here is what we can reasonably expect:

Dual Protagonist Online System

GTA6's dual protagonist system (Lucia and Jason) may extend to online play. Players could potentially partner up as a duo, similar to how GTA Online allowed crew-based heists but with deeper character integration.

Expanded Heist System

GTA Online's heists were among its most popular features. GTA6 Online is expected to expand this with more complex multi-stage heists that leverage the dual protagonist system and Leonida's diverse map regions.

Living Economy

GTA6's world is designed to feel alive — with dynamic weather, NPC routines, and real-time events. The online mode may incorporate these systems, creating a shared world where player actions affect the economy and environment.

Property & Business Ownership

GTA Online's property system — buying businesses, managing criminal enterprises, and collecting passive income — is likely to return in an expanded form. Vice City's real estate market and Leonida's rural properties offer diverse investment opportunities.

Cross-Platform Play

GTA Online did not support cross-platform play between PS5, Xbox, and PC. Given the industry trend toward cross-platform multiplayer since 2013, GTA6 Online may finally introduce cross-play — though this has not been confirmed.

Release Timing for Online Mode

GTA Online launched two weeks after GTA5. However, Rockstar's approach has evolved:

  • GTA5 / GTA Online — Online launched 2 weeks after the base game (October 2013)
  • Red Dead Online — Launched as a beta 1 month after RDR2 (November 2018)

Based on this pattern, GTA6 Online could launch anywhere from 2 weeks to 1 month after the November 19, 2026 console release. Rockstar may also choose to delay the online component to ensure stability at launch.

Monetization

GTA Online's microtransaction system — using "Shark Cards" to purchase in-game currency — was enormously profitable. GTA6 Online is expected to use a similar model, though it may be rebranded or restructured. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has emphasized that monetization will be "consumer-friendly" and not predatory.

Will GTA6 Online Replace GTA Online?

This is one of the biggest questions. GTA Online still has an active player base and continues to receive updates. Rockstar may:

  • Continue both — Keep GTA Online running alongside GTA6 Online
  • Sunset GTA Online — Eventually wind down GTA Online to focus resources on GTA6 Online
  • Migrate accounts — Allow players to carry over progress or purchases to GTA6 Online

Rockstar has not made any official statements about the future of GTA Online after GTA6 launches.
