GTA6’s pulled PEGI text was GTA5’s format
PEGI’s GTA VI page went up and came down in hours. GTA5’s four entries are still there, and that text is just as explicit, 46 days before launch.
The page appeared on 2 October and was gone the same day. PEGI, the board that rates games for most of Europe and for the United Kingdom, published a listing for Grand Theft Auto VI carrying an 18 and, beneath it, a written account of what the game contains. IGN read it, and its update is timestamped 2 October at 11:39 a.m. Pacific: the page was no longer available, and in its place stood a listing reading that the requested page could not be found. The board has not explained the removal and Rockstar has not commented on it. Everything now circulating about the wording comes from screenshots taken before it went, which means the most-quoted sentences of this week’s coverage cannot currently be checked at their source by anyone.
What PEGI publishes for a game is a document rather than a badge. An entry on the board’s site runs to four headed sections — advice for consumers, a brief outline of the game, content specific issues, and other issues — and the last two carry free prose instead of the short category labels that appear on a box. Read on 4 October, the entry for Grand Theft Auto V is still live and still complete, and it is the right comparison for two reasons: it is the same publisher and the same series, and it is the last game Rockstar put through this board. No outlet on this week’s story appears to have opened it, even though it is the one page in the whole affair that answers the question everyone was asking.
GTA5’s content specific issues section is a description of technique written in the board’s own words, not a list of categories. It records violence against vulnerable and defenceless characters who may be shot, beaten or run over; scenes of torture “in which a variety of tools may be used to cause maximum injury”; incendiary bullets that “may set characters on fire, who then writhe on the floor screaming in pain”; sight of wounds on bodies; and strong language, printing both of the words it names, “fuck” and “cunt”. Its other issues section goes further and names the product being sold — shark cards, by name — before adding illegal drugs including the production of methamphetamine in a lab, and sexual scenes without visible genitals. That is a public regulator printing torture equipment and a slating of commerce on the same page, for a game anyone can still buy today.
Set the two texts side by side and the detail this week was called unprecedented turns out to be the board’s house style. The pulled GTA VI text, as reproduced, describes violence as “bloody with a high degree of realism”, weapons able to cause “detailed decapitation and dismemberment”, drug use called frequent and prominent, and private dances in nightclubs with physical contact between player and dancer. Those sentences are written to the same register as the live GTA5 page, which puts torture and burning bodies a few lines away from the two words a news bulletin would not print. So the withdrawal does not tell a reader that PEGI said something unusual about this game. It tells them that a page the board maintains for a 2013 release was visible for a 2026 one for part of a single afternoon.
One line in the pulled text does go beyond what the live GTA5 page carries, and it is worth separating from the rest. The reported description says cocaine can be carried in a small bag in the character’s pocket and snorted from the hand “including outside a set scene”. GTA5’s page records drug use and a lab, which are activities in places; an item in an inventory that can be used outside a scripted moment is a system. That distinction is this site’s reading rather than PEGI’s, and it rests on reproductions rather than on a page anybody can open today, so it belongs in the reported column and not the confirmed one. It is also the only line in the whole description that speaks to a mechanic rather than to a scene, which makes it precisely the line that would need a live record to settle, and the record is the thing that was removed.
The register itself is countable, and the count is what matters to anyone who wants to verify any of this later. Searched on 4 October, PEGI’s public search returns 51 results for “grand theft auto” and not one of them is Grand Theft Auto VI, while four of the 51 are separate Grand Theft Auto V entries spanning the 2014 release through the 2022 one. The ESRB, read for this site on 2 October, likewise holds no record for Grand Theft Auto VI and three for GTA5. Two boards have now decided this rating and neither publishes a page a reader can check the decision against, which is a different kind of absence from the one the coverage described: not a board withholding its reasoning, but a board whose reasoning was visible by accident. Nothing about the purchase moves. GTA6 arrives on 19 November with pre-load from 12 November, on the same editions at the same prices, and for a buyer in the United Kingdom or Europe the age badge was already PEGI 18 in the store metadata read on 2 October. The thing worth watching for on this story is not another screenshot. It is a record.
