GTA6 Has No Microtransactions or AI
Rob Nelson confirms no monetization and no generative AI in GTA6. Rockstar also details 600,000 hand-made animations and an 80-hour campaign.
During the preview event tied to the Extended Look, Kinda Funny hosts Andy Cortez and Greg Miller put two questions directly to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson. Asked whether players would be able to spend real money inside the game, Nelson answered flatly: "No monetizations in this game." Asked about generative AI, the answer was just as short — "No AI."
The New York Times, which published its own feature from the same preview window, put numbers behind the handcrafted claim. GTA6 contains more than 600,000 animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA5 and about 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar reportedly sent a research team to Miami to give developers real-world context for building Leonida, and hired a Miami stylist to dress non-playable characters. Nelson said his own playthrough ran around 80 hours including optional objectives with narrative consequences.
The position is consistent with what Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said earlier this year: "Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building. Their worlds are handcrafted. That's what differentiates them." Zelnick has been explicit that Take-Two itself is "actively embracing generative AI" for internal efficiency, running hundreds of pilots to cut costs on mundane work — the distinction is between back-office tooling and content that ships in the game.
Two caveats are worth reading carefully. First, the no-monetization answer was given in the context of the single-player campaign. When Kinda Funny asked about the next version of GTA Online, Rockstar declined to comment at all. GTA Online has sold Shark Cards for over a decade, and roughly 78% of Take-Two's net revenue comes from recurring consumer spending — so the silence is doing a lot of work.
Second, "no monetization" refers to in-game purchases, not to the price of entry. Rockstar is still selling a $99.99 Ultimate Edition alongside the $79.99 standard version, and it gates real campaign content: exclusive vehicles, Vice City-themed weapons, access to specific in-game shops, and Classic Car Collection restoration missions. Rockstar describes the bonuses as threaded across all of Jason and Lucia's story rather than bolted on at the end. Reports have consistently said the more expensive edition is outselling the standard one.
