How Big Is the GTA6 Map? Rockstar’s Ratios
Rockstar has given ratios, not square miles: Leonida is put at roughly twice the size of GTA5’s map and three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area.
Ask how big the Grand Theft Auto VI map is and the honest answer is a set of ratios rather than a number. Rockstar briefed a group of outlets and creators on the world ahead of launch, and Rob Nelson, who co-heads Rockstar North, gave content creator TGG comparisons instead of a measurement: the playable world is described as roughly twice the size of GTA5’s map and about three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
The same briefing produced more specific claims. Vice City on its own is put at around twice the size of Los Santos, and once the surrounding suburbs and rural edges are counted the figure cited for the city plus its outskirts is roughly eleven times Los Santos and its immediate surroundings. TGG also described hundreds of enterable interiors, a long way past GTA5, where walk-in buildings were largely limited to safehouses, a handful of shops and the occasional public building. Getting across a map at that scale is meant to lean on a rebuilt transit layer — buses, trains, trams, taxis and an in-game rideshare service — rather than fast travel alone.
The catch is that none of this is a specification. Rockstar has never published a square mileage for Leonida, and Nelson did not hand one over. Every headline of the form “GTA6 is X square miles” traces back to a community reconstruction — someone tracing the map out of screenshots and trailer frames — not to the studio. The ratios themselves reached most readers as paraphrase: the outlets that covered the briefing reported that the world is twice or three times something, rather than quoting Nelson directly. That distinction carries weight, because a comparison relayed from an interview is a different object from a line in a press release, and treating one as the other is how a bad number becomes permanent.
There is a wider lesson in how GTA6 figures travel. An analysis published in September pointed out that three of the best-known GTA6 vehicle databases answered the same question three different ways on the same day — 294 vehicles, over 100, and 54. None of them was lying. One counted only officially published material, one folded in leaked development footage, and one listed only vehicles it could name outright. Three methods, three answers, one game that has not shipped. The number you read is usually a statement about the counter’s rules, not about the game.
What that means in practice: the scale ratios are worth keeping, at the level of “considerably larger than anything Rockstar has built,” because they come from the studio’s own head of development. Square mileage, exact interior counts and vehicle totals are not settled and will not be until the game is in players’ hands on November 19, 2026.
