Rockstar Responds to GTA6 Gameplay Leaks

Rockstar Games has publicly addressed the wave of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leaks that spread across social media starting around August 18, 2026, calling the situation "heartbreaking for our team" in a statement published on August 26.

The full statement reads: "It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time." Rockstar added that the team is "very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has, from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay."

The leaked material — attributed online to an anonymous figure known as Cyberleek — included clips showing driving, basketball, flying, and combat sequences involving protagonist Jason Duval, along with locations such as beaches, nightlife districts, gas stations, strip clubs, and even a nudist village. Rockstar and outside reporters have cautioned that much of the footage appears to come from a development build and should not be treated as representative of the final game.

Take-Two Interactive has moved quickly against the leaks. On August 20, the publisher filed requests in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York seeking subpoenas directed at Microsoft and Discord for identifying information linked to accounts and servers allegedly involved in distributing the material. Take-Two subsequently expanded its efforts with additional DMCA subpoena requests involving X and YouTube, targeting accounts allegedly distributing GTA6 footage.

This is not the first major breach. In 2022, dozens of development videos surfaced online showing early footage of Jason and Lucia, leading to the arrest of hacker Arion Kurtaj, who was later given an indefinite hospital order. Rockstar reportedly tightened internal security afterward, including a return-to-office mandate five days a week in 2024 citing productivity and security concerns.

In its statement, Rockstar acknowledged that "the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers" and asked players to wait for the official release. The studio also thanked the community for its support: "Ultimately, we are making this game for you, and without you, we would not have the privilege of making games." GTA6 remains scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
