Rockstar’s founder profiles land at launch

GQ spent four years on a Sam Houser profile and lost it weeks out. The two earlier founder interviews both ran inside the last two weeks before launch.

The interview is not happening, and the only person who has said so is the journalist who arranged it. On 3 October Sam White, a writer at GQ, stated publicly that a profile of Rockstar Games co-founder and president Sam Houser would not take place. He described four years of conversations with the company, a confirmation from Rockstar in April that Houser would sit for it, and a reversal inside the past few weeks which he attributed to reasons that were “mostly personal”. He said he had his questions ready and signed off in a way that reads as an ending rather than a postponement. Rockstar has issued no statement, and no replacement interview has been announced. Nothing about the game itself moves.

Why the magazine had a claim on this interview is the part worth holding on to. White wrote GQ’s Red Dead Redemption 2 story, published on 24 October 2018, two days before that game went on sale, and it was built around one of the rare sit-downs Dan Houser gave in that cycle. Dan Houser left Rockstar in February 2020. Sam Houser has run the studio without him since, which is what made the founder — rather than a writer or a studio head — the subject a magazine with a Rockstar track record would ask for, and what made a profile of him the one thing this campaign could not get from anybody else.

This site has been measuring the campaign by lead time, and the same instrument reads oddly here. Take the two founder-level profiles Rockstar has allowed in the modern era. GQ’s ran two days before Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped. The interview Sam Houser gave to The Sunday Times ran days before Grand Theft Auto V’s 17 September 2013 release, with the trade press carrying its quotes in the same week. Both of them landed inside the final fortnight. The attempt in this cycle was made much further out — agreed in April, roughly seven months before the 19 November date — and it is the one that came apart, which may say more about when the studio is willing to talk than about anything that changed in the last few weeks.

What Rockstar has done instead is put its staff on the record, in numbers. Game Informer’s issue 382, published on 29 September, carried Aaron Garbut and three other named staff. LOVE’s issue 27, revealed on 2 October, produced Rob Nelson, Rupert Humphries, Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern and Alexa D’Agostino, and the magazine’s own excerpts later added the open-world writing director James Horton. That is nine named people across two magazines in eight days with no founder among them, and the studio’s own history runs the same way: Sam Houser’s on-the-record interviews amount to a handful spread over more than two decades, and almost all of them sit in or beside a launch window, from an interview in Grand Theft Auto IV’s shipping week in 2008 to the 2013 piece days before GTA5.

The judgment call is what to make of it, and the honest answer is less than the coverage will. The withdrawal is documented by the writer himself and not by the studio, so the fact of it is solid while the reason is not: “personal reasons” is the whole of what has been published, and there is no second account to weigh against it. What can be stated without inference is that the arrangement existed, that it was confirmed in April, and that it ended. What cannot be stated is why, or that it had anything to do with the game. Readers of this story will see a lot of supplied motive in the coming days, and the document does not contain one.

Three things follow from the dates rather than from the mood. The profile was the single object in this campaign with a four-year lead, and it is the one that never shipped, while three magazine covers have landed inside 85, 55 and 48 days of release. If the historical pattern holds, the next realistic window for a founder interview is launch week rather than the weeks before it, because that is where every previous one has fallen. And the account of this game is now being given by its staff, with Nelson and Garbut named as the studio’s public faces for it — which is a different thing from a founder’s account and, 46 days out, is the only one on offer. GTA6 arrives on 19 November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
