Game Informer’s GTA6 Cover: 55 Days Out
Game Informer’s GTA6 cover story lands 29 September, 55 days before the 19 November launch. GTA V’s cover arrived 313 days out.
Game Informer revealed on 25 September that Grand Theft Auto VI is the cover of its 382nd issue: a 14-page feature built on interviews with lead designers at Rockstar Games, 12 screenshots the magazine describes as new and exclusive, and cover art of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos made by Rockstar for the occasion. The systems the reveal names are the weather, described as advanced systems that simulate Florida’s less sunny weather phenomena, and the wildlife it calls staggering in quantity and native and otherwise in origin, roaming Leonida on land, in the air and in the sea. The article also covers how Rockstar’s research trips to Miami and Florida shaped the state, a subject the magazine’s writer, senior associate editor Marcus Stewart, approaches as a lifelong South Florida native. The digital issue is readable on 29 September; print copies reach subscribers and newsstands in the coming weeks.
What that announcement makes measurable is where a magazine cover now sits in Rockstar’s launch calendar. Game Informer has fronted GTA IV on issue 169, GTA V on issue 236 and now GTA VI on issue 382, and the distance between cover and release has collapsed. The GTA V cover was revealed on 8 November 2012, 313 days before the game reached shelves on 17 September 2013. This one was revealed 55 days before the 19 November 2026 launch, and 51 days before the issue is even readable. In 2012 the cover story was where the world met three protagonists and the on-the-fly switching between them; in 2026 two trailers, a 27-minute Extended Look, the soundtrack album, open pre-orders and a $399.99 merchandise box all went first. The magazine has stopped being the reveal and become the last drip before release.
That matters because of what the feature is promising. Weather and wildlife are not equally photographable. Wildlife fits a still frame — an alligator in the swamp, birds over the Glades, something in the water. A weather system does not. No screenshot shows whether storms are regional or global, whether they last minutes or days, whether they alter missions, or whether the sky over Vice City is scripted to clear for a story beat. Those are the questions a system has to answer, and they live in the interview text rather than in the 12 images. The readable date, not the reveal date, is what will settle whether this issue changes anything that is known about the game.
The publication schedule has narrowed at the same time. When Game Informer revealed the GTA V cover in 2012 it told digital subscribers that same day that the issue would be live within hours, around 2pm Central Time, with print copies following within two weeks, and it spent that day working through a rush of readers trying to buy the single digital issue without a subscription. The 2026 route is different: the pitch is a print subscription that delivers issue 382 as a first issue, the digital edition arrives four days after the reveal, and the magazine says the GTAVI issue will be available only for a limited time. Anyone reading the cover reveal as the information release is reading a table of contents.
One structural change is new and worth recording. Issue 382 is the first GTA cover the magazine has published under an owner that is not a games retailer. Game Informer ran under FuncoLand and then GameStop, which closed it in August 2024; the studio and publisher Gunzilla Games bought it in March 2025, restored the website and its archive, brought the entire staff back and restarted the print run, saying the publication would remain completely editorially independent. The ownership is a first for this cover series. Nothing in the reveal suggests it changed the contents, and we have no evidence that it did.
The limits of the announcement deserve the same precision as its contents. Game Informer named no interviewees, saying only that several lead designers were interviewed; a French GTA site relaying the reveal listed five Rockstar staff it said were quoted, among them Aaron Garbut, credited as art director on every mainline GTA since GTA III, and Rupert Humphries, who shares the writing credit on GTA V. We could not verify that list against Game Informer’s own announcement. Nor does the reveal promise a trailer, story detail or anything about an online mode, and the description of GTA6 as the biggest game of the year, decade and quite possibly of all time is the magazine’s judgement rather than a figure. The numbers attached so far are 14 pages and 12 screenshots, against 18 pages when GTA V took the cover — a smaller feature, published later, for the game the same magazine calls bigger than any before it.
