GTA6’s free GTA+ month has two deadlines
Sony’s store says redeem by 31 March 2027. Microsoft’s says 180 days from your pre-order. For a launch-date buyer that is a 49-day gap.
On 9 October PlayStation’s support account reminded anyone who had pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto VI digitally to claim the free month of GTA+ before the window closes. The reminder is not itself the story — the offer has been printed on the game’s own store page since pre-orders opened on 25 June, and the reminder adds no term the page does not already carry. What has not been set out anywhere is that the two storefronts running the offer wrote two different deadlines into their own product text, and that on one of the two stores the deadline a buyer gets depends on the day the buyer pre-ordered.
Sony’s page states the terms in the store’s own words: “Pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI and get one month of GTA+ on PlayStation 5 at no extra cost. Subscription continues until canceled. Offer ends November 19th 2026… Must be redeemed by March 31st 2027.” The same block carries two clauses the coverage has not quoted. An existing subscriber’s month “will be added onto your existing subscription after the offer is claimed”, which GTA+ does not normally permit, and eligibility is every PlayStation country store except Bahrain, China, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, the Russian Federation and Taiwan, China. A support reminder is a marketing act. That block is the contract, and it is the only thing a buyer could point at if the month failed to arrive five months from now.
The Microsoft Store’s product description states the same perk with the opposite kind of clock. “Receive a month of GTA+ with your pre-order; must be redeemed within 180 days after placing your pre-order.” It adds two conditions Sony’s page does not carry: the offer is not available to child accounts with restrictions on age-restricted content, and redemption runs through the console rather than a web page — a pop-up notification, then the Store, then the profile icon, then the “Offers and credits” screen. Both storefronts cap it at one redemption per account regardless of how many copies a person buys, both state that the membership auto-renews at the regular monthly price once the free month ends, and both print the same purchase deadline: 19 November 2026 at 23:59:59 on Microsoft’s side, “prior to November 20, 2026” on Sony’s.
Set the two redemption clauses side by side and they are not the same rule. Sony names a date. Microsoft names a duration measured from the purchase. Pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026, so a buyer who ordered that first day has to redeem by 22 December 2026 on Microsoft’s terms — five weeks after launch — against 31 March 2027 on Sony’s, which is 279 days later. That is a 99-day difference for one advertised perk, decided entirely by which console the game was bought for. The gap then reverses for late buyers, because a fixed date shrinks as the purchase slips while a duration does not: buy on 19 November, the last qualifying day, and Sony gives 131 days against Microsoft’s 180, a 49-day advantage the other way. The two clocks are equal for exactly one purchase date. On 2 October 2026, 180 days before 31 March 2027, it does not matter which store was used.
Whether the month is worth claiming depends on what it is for, and the stores say that too. It is a subscription to the existing GTA Online, the 2013 game, not to anything built for GTA6 — the same Microsoft listing carries the line “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience”. Neither store states the monthly price inside the offer block; GTA BOOM, which has covered the perk in detail, relays it at about $7.99 and describes a monthly GTA$500,000 deposit among the benefits, neither of which appears in the offer text. So the reward is a month of an old game’s service attached to the purchase of a new one, it is worth most to anyone still playing the old one during the five weeks to 19 November, and its cost is a renewal both storefronts disclose and neither schedules on the buyer’s behalf.
One correction to this site’s own coverage, which has described the month as a PlayStation Store benefit. Both storefronts carry it, and the Microsoft wording is the one that carries a clock instead of a date, which is why the Xbox version is the one that can lapse while its owner is still playing the game it came with. Nothing else moves. The game is still 19 November, pre-load is still 12 November, the editions are still $79.99 and $99.99, and the box still holds a code rather than a disc. What is not known is whether the 180-day clause has ever been enforced, and there is no published way to test that short of missing the date. The practical line is the arithmetic: a pre-order placed before 2 October is better on PlayStation, and one placed after it is better on Xbox.
