GTA6 Cast: The Actor Beat Rockstar to It

Stephen Root told the AP he is in GTA6 — the first cast member to confirm his own role. Rockstar has still not named an actor for any character.

The first person to confirm a Grand Theft Auto VI cast member was not Rockstar. On Sunday September 13, in an interview published by AP Entertainment, Stephen Root was asked about his involvement in the game and answered directly: “Yeah, you’re gonna see me in there.” He added that he was “so happy to be involved with it.” That is a performer confirming his own role in a game whose publisher has, to this day, never named a single actor in the cast.

The character name is a separate question, and the reporting has been looser about it than the interview was. Several outlets wrote that Root named Brian Heder. He did not. Root confirmed he is in the game and did not say which part he plays; the identification of the role as Brian Heder comes from Variety’s reporting, matching the voice listeners had already picked out of the trailers. It is a strong identification — Rockstar’s own character guide describes Brian Heder as a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Leonida Keys, still moving product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori, and the character appears in official footage alongside Jason. But the studio’s character page credits no actor at all. Confirmed: Stephen Root is in GTA6. Reported, and not stated by him: the part he plays.

Root’s own account of why he spoke is the most useful thing he said. The character had appeared in Rockstar’s marketing “maybe almost a year ago”, and “there were too many people who knew me from King of the Hill and my voice. So I think that secret kind of got divulged then.” The leak was not a lapse in the actor’s discretion. It was the studio’s own footage plus a recognisable voice, which is a structural problem for a company that treats cast lists as sealed until the credits roll. Secrecy only holds while performers cannot be identified by ear, and the better known the actor, the shorter that window is. Rockstar’s response has been to confirm nothing, ever, which is why the first official cast list for GTA6 will probably arrive as end credits rather than as a press release.

Two pieces of context sit around the confirmation. Root, 74, won his first Emmy on Monday September 14 for supporting actor in a comedy series, for Widow’s Bay, and Variety reports he is the oldest winner in that category. And the interview’s setting is less settled than the interview itself: the AP wire placed it at a Walk of Fame ceremony for King of the Hill creator Greg Daniels, while other outlets filed it from a BAFTA tea party or an Emmy press event. When accounts of where something was said diverge, the quote is the durable part and the scene-setting is noise.

What the confirmation does not do is settle the rest of the cast. Jason Duval, Lucia Caminos and Cal Hampton are all still attached to names Rockstar has never confirmed — Dylan Rourke, Manni L. Perez and Bobby Moynihan respectively, each widely reported from voice matching and none of them official. This site’s character pages keep those two categories apart for that reason, and Brian Heder’s entry now records Root’s confirmation without promoting the character name to fact. Expect the full cast list on November 19, 2026, when the game launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — not before.
