ESRB filed GTA 6 with the reason left blank

The ratings register now holds a GTA 6 record: seven descriptors, one interactive element, and no written reason. GTA V’s summary runs 2,000 characters.

The ratings register has a record for Grand Theft Auto VI now. It did not on 2 October, when this site searched esrb.org for the game and got Vice City titles back — an absence that went into two articles. Read on 8 November, the same search returns record 41627: Rockstar Games, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, rated M for Mature 17+. No press release travelled with it, and the board does not print a filing date on the page, so the entry arrived at some point between those two reads. Those two endpoints are all anyone can vouch for.

What the record contains is seven content descriptors and one interactive element. The seven are Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol — the same seven, in the same order, as the current-generation Grand Theft Auto V record. The interactive element is In-Game Purchases, and only that. The marker the board applies when players can meet each other, “Users Interact”, is not on it. It is on all three GTA V records, next to In-Game Purchases on the two later entries and next to “Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB” on the 2013 one. That asymmetry is what this site reported on 2 October from a store field, with the caveat that both values are filled in on the publisher’s side. The register is the board’s own page, which is where a reader is supposed to be able to check the decision rather than the submission.

The part that came back empty is the reasoning. The record has a section headed Rating Summary, and what sits under it is one generated sentence: the game is rated M for Mature 17+ with those seven descriptors, and also includes In-Game Purchases. There is no paragraph about scenes, weapons, drugs or language. Open the current-generation GTA V record instead and the same section runs to roughly 2,000 characters — an interrogation sequence with a pipe wrench, tooth removal and electrocution; implied sexual acts and a topless lap dance; cocaine, peyote and drinking while driving; three specific profanities, spelled out with asterisks. On 2 October this site wrote that when the ESRB summary appeared it would be the first place a difference from GTA V could show up. It has appeared. The first place a difference could show up contains nothing, and the page does not say whether that is a filing still in progress or a filing that will stay this way.

Europe’s paperwork is messier, and one page contradicts itself. Sony’s German product page now prints the German age block — “Drastische Gewalt, Drogen, Problematische Vorbilder”, plus “In-Game-Käufe” — which is a final classification with three named categories. Lower down the same page, the FAQ still answers the question of which age restrictions apply by saying that at the time of writing the ratings for Grand Theft Auto VI had not yet been set. Both lines were on the page when it was read today, eleven days before launch. A third register is still silent: PEGI’s public search returns Grand Theft Auto V entries and no Grand Theft Auto VI entry at all, exactly as it did on 4 October. Germany uses its own board rather than PEGI, so that silence is expected rather than contradictory — but the country-by-country picture is now one complete record with no reasoning, one final classification printed above a sentence denying it exists, and one register with nothing in it.

Against all of that sits the sleeve. Photographs of a sealed German PS5 case appeared on 7 November, and the back carries a technical strip: 230 GB minimum, support for DualSense vibration and trigger effects, “In-Game-Käufe”, “PS5 Pro optimiert”, and a line reading “Online-Funktionalität”. That last item is what the coverage took, in several languages, as the first sign of an online mode. The strip is worth reading as a set, because the same packaging language exists in text form on Sony’s own store listing, itemised. Read today, the US product page lists In-game purchases optional, Offline play enabled, 1 player, Remote Play supported, PS5 Version, PS5 Pro Enhanced, and Vibration function and trigger effect supported. No online line. The identical template for Grand Theft Auto V lists PS Plus required for online play, Online play required, and support for up to 30 online players with PS Plus. The store page has a slot for precisely the claim the sleeve is being read to make, and the slot is empty.

Two things follow, and neither of them is that an online mode has been cancelled. The first is that the only first-party document that enumerates capabilities, updated per title and readable this morning, describes a single-player product with optional purchases, while the sleeve adds a word the page does not carry and nobody has explained the difference. The second is that the sleeve is the one artifact here that cannot be checked at all: unattributed photographs of retail stock, a Reddit post and account deleted within a day, no comment from Rockstar or Take-Two, and a retailer’s Instagram as the only corroboration. For a buyer on 19 November nothing moves — $79.99 or €79.99 buys the game, no document attaches a subscription to it, and no online mode has been announced or dated. What would move it is a new line on record 41627. “Users Interact” is the specific string that would appear, because that is how it appears on every GTA V record, and a written summary is the other. Watching the register costs nothing and beats watching a photograph.
