GTA6 Box: Not Sold Out, Resold at 4x

The $399.99 Vice City Collection is still on sale at its list price three days after pre-orders opened, while eBay asks run to four times that.

Two sets of numbers have been circulating about the Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection since pre-orders opened on 24 September, and they point in opposite directions. Coverage on 26 September reported that the $399.99 box had still not sold out roughly 48 hours after going on sale; the community figure Ben, who posts as @videotech, had said there was “definitely an expectation it would sell within minutes”, after Rockstar switched on a stock-alert feature the night before and capped purchases at one per person. The same day, other outlets reported the resale market instead: eBay asks of $600 to $1,500 and above, a high ask near $1,750, and European offers from around €500, against a list price of $399.99.

The two reports are not in conflict, and Rockstar’s own sales record is where that becomes visible. The catalogue that serves the Rockstar Store, operated by Xsolla and readable at item level, returns can_be_bought: true for the US SKU, a per-user limit of one of which one is still available, is_pre_order: true, a release date of 19 November and stock_count_remaining: 0. Read on 27 September, that describes a product anyone can still buy at list, once per account. The zero is the field most likely to be misread: an item flagged as a pre-order with a November release date has no stock level to be zero, and the storefront page next to it still offers an Add to Cart and states in its own interface text that the item is “limited to one per person”.

That open primary channel is what makes the eBay asks something other than prices. A premium can only hold while supply is genuinely short, and the maker is still selling the thing at list, so these are unexecuted offers rather than a market rate; no completed sale has been documented at any of the quoted figures. The per-account cap matters for the same reason, and not only as marketing. It means no single buyer can be holding a stack of these boxes: the total resale supply is bounded by the number of accounts that ordered, so a listing offering multiple units is either buying across several accounts or selling something it does not have.

The record also fixes the horizon. The crate does not physically exist for any buyer yet — the catalogue dates it 19 November, the day the game unlocks, and Rockstar’s store treats shipping as a separate step from release. Anyone paying four times list today is buying a promise of a November delivery, from a seller whose own single unit has not shipped either. That is roughly two months of exposure to an object still available from the manufacturer at $399.99, which is a strange thing to attach a scarcity premium to.

Rockstar’s scarcity language is not checkable from outside. The store calls the run limited, the cap is enforced by software, and the stock-alert feature was added the night before launch, but no allocation number has been published, and the catalogue’s stock field carries no meaning on a pre-order item. That leaves one observable test, and it is the only one that will settle whether the resale asks have anything behind them: whether the primary channel empties before 19 November. Three days in, it has not.

The community has already answered the exclusivity question by another route. The centrepiece of the box is a six-inch Macca the Gator figurine sold only inside it, and by 26 September, according to a Chinese-language relay of a T5G report, a fan had modelled an approximation from Rockstar’s own photographs and published the file for anyone to print. What that yields is unpainted when it leaves the printer, and unlicensed, and free. The figurine is the object the box is built around and the object a printer replaces most cheaply.
