GTA6: 8 Days Too Late, 1 Day Early Enough
GTA6 misses the Golden Joysticks by 8 days and makes The Game Awards by 1. The binding date is the ballot, not the November cutoff.
The Golden Joystick Awards published its 2026 shortlist on 25 September and Grand Theft Auto VI appears in none of it — not in Console Game of the Year, not in any other category. The reason is scheduling rather than judgement. The ceremony is in London on 11 November, eight days before the game launches on 19 November, and voting in most categories is open only until 23 October, with Ultimate Game of the Year voted on between 26 and 30 October. 007 First Light and Big Walk lead the field with five nominations each, and Resident Evil Requiem has three.
The number the coverage tended to leave out is the one that puts GTA6 on both sides of the same line. The Game Awards is set for 10 December 2026 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, and for years its eligibility cutoff has been the Friday of the third week of November — 21 November in 2025, which makes 20 November the equivalent date in 2026. GTA6 ships on the Thursday of that week, one day inside the window. One release date therefore misses one award by eight days and makes another by one, and the difference between the two organisations is a fortnight of committee scheduling rather than anything about the game.
At The Game Awards, though, the cutoff is not the date that decides anything. The show places its eligibility line where it does so that the jury will have had a chance to play the field before voting, and the voting happens in the first half of November, with nominees announced in mid-November — before GTA6 is on sale at all. A game released on 19 November can be eligible on paper in a year when nobody casting a ballot had access to it, which means technical eligibility and practical eligibility are different questions with different answers. The show has said its 2026 eligibility dates will be confirmed in the autumn and has not published them, so the 20 November line is the show’s established pattern rather than an announcement. The pattern is all there is to go on.
That also disposes of the framing that GTA6 has lost its shot at the big five. The five are the Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards, the DICE Awards, the GDC Awards and the BAFTAs, and two games have won all five in their release year: Baldur’s Gate 3, released in August 2023, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, released in April 2025. Both shipped in the first half of their years, which is not a coincidence. With Joysticks voting closing in October, no game released in November can be on the Joysticks ballot for the year it ships in, whatever date the ceremony takes. The award GTA6 cannot win in 2026 is one it can compete for in 2027.
The assumption that a launch this size converts into trophies deserves the same treatment. Rockstar’s own Red Dead Redemption 2 released on 26 October 2018 to near-universal praise and won none of the five Game of the Year awards: God of War took four of them and Fortnite took the Golden Joystick, decided by voters rather than by a calendar. Thirteen years of waiting and a large pre-order book do not force a result. What the shortlist does show is the field that will be judged in a year whose biggest release was never on the ballot — a ten-title Console Game of the Year list leaning on horror, racing and licensed properties, and a winner that will be debated with an asterisk attached.
One note for readers following this in Chinese. Sina Finance’s version of the story places the Joysticks ceremony on 4 October and GTA6’s release on 12 October. Both dates are wrong, and the second is wrong by five weeks. The eight-day gap that the other Chinese-language outlets report is correct, and so is the conclusion they draw from it.
