The 8 million GTA 6 is chasing was mostly PC

7.71 million pre-orders sit 290,000 short of Cyberpunk 2077's 8 million. That gap compares two consoles to five storefronts.

Sensor Tower’s 3 November estimate, reported by Insider Gaming and repeated across Chinese outlets within a day, puts Grand Theft Auto VI at 7.71 million digital pre-orders and roughly $751 million in pre-order revenue. The sentence that travels with the figure is that the game now sits about 290,000 copies short of Cyberpunk 2077’s eight million, usually described as the pre-order record. The subtraction is right. The comparison is not, and both halves of what makes it wrong are published numbers.

CD Projekt released its total on 10 December 2020, launch day, and released the split alongside it: eight million pre-orders across PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Stadia, of which 59 per cent were PC and 74 per cent digital. GamesIndustry.biz did the arithmetic at the time and put the console share at just over three million — 3.28 million if the 41 per cent is taken literally. Grand Theft Auto VI’s 7.71 million contains no PC copies at all, because there is no PC version to pre-order and Rockstar has not announced one. Set the console figures against each other and the game is not 96 per cent of the way to a record; it is 2.35 times past the console half of it.

The clocks differ too, and in the same direction. Cyberpunk’s pre-orders opened in June 2019 for a December 2020 release — eighteen months — and the eight million was disclosed after that window had closed, on the morning the game went on sale. Grand Theft Auto VI opened pre-orders on 25 June 2026 for a 19 November release, about five months, and 7.71 million is a running total taken sixteen days before launch. One number is final and spans five storefronts; the other is intermediate and spans two consoles. Printed side by side without that sentence, they look like neighbours on the same scale, which is the only reason the 290,000 gap is worth writing about at all.

What the estimate does support is a mix. Divide revenue by units and the average pre-order comes to $97.4, against list prices of $79.99 and $99.99, a division IT之家 ran on 5 November while noting it sits nearer the Ultimate Edition. Taken as a share, $97.4 implies about 87 per cent of buyers chose Ultimate — an inference, and an upper bound, because VAT-inclusive European pricing lifts the average without adding a single Ultimate sale and regional differences run both ways. The platform split, by contrast, has barely moved: PlayStation was 74.2 per cent of units on 13 October and 74.4 per cent on 3 November, so the three weeks in between added roughly in proportion to what was already there. Whatever drove the acceleration — the count rose from 6.08 million to 7.71 million in twenty-one days — it did not change who was buying.

The all-platform comparison becomes legitimate the day a PC build exists, and the 2027 first-quarter date in circulation is a reported claim from an unnamed source, not a schedule. Until then the only defensible statement is that Grand Theft Auto VI has already passed Cyberpunk 2077’s console pre-orders by a wide margin, and the eight million will keep being printed beside the 7.71 million because it makes the better sentence. It is also worth remembering what the eight million was: a publisher’s own launch-day disclosure, not an audited record. Nobody certifies pre-orders, which is why the same word is doing two jobs in the same paragraph.
