212 GB is a floor on PS5, a ceiling for Xbox
Rockstar moved pre-load to 10 November and published one space figure. Sony calls 212 GB a minimum on PS5; Rockstar calls it a maximum.
Rockstar dated the pre-load in a Newswire post on 3 November headed “Grand Theft Auto VI Pre-Load Begins on November 10”, two days earlier than the 12 November that has stood on both storefronts since the 24 June pre-order announcement. Nothing else in the sequence moved. The launch stays on 19 November, the editions stay at $79.99 and $99.99, and the boxed copy — a case holding a download code rather than a disc — still reaches retailers on 12 November. So the announcement handed two extra days to one way of buying the game and none to the other, and it swapped a reported figure for an official one that is written as a ceiling.
On PlayStation the extra days are exactly two, in every market. Sony’s product page now reads that pre-loading “will be available to those who have pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto VI, starting November 10, 2026 at midnight local time”, and both editions carry a bullet saying “9-Day Pre-load” — a string that replaces the “7-Day Pre-load” the same page showed as recently as 31 October. Local midnight to local midnight is 216 hours wherever the buyer lives, because the same clock governs both ends of the interval.
Xbox measures the same fortnight with one clock instead of two. Pre-load opens at a single instant, 00:00 GMT on 10 November, which is 7pm Eastern and 4pm Pacific on the 9th, while the launch still unlocks at local midnight. The window therefore stretches or shrinks with the buyer’s distance from Greenwich: nine days and five hours on the American east coast, 221 in total; nine days exactly in Britain; eight days and eleven hours in New Zealand, 203. The market that plays first has the least time to download, and it is the only market where the arithmetic needs checking against an actual connection.
The space figure is where one number stops being one number. Rockstar’s post gives the requirement as up to 212 GB of available storage, depending on the device. Sony’s page, for the same game in the same week, prints: “Get ready by clearing a minimum of 212GB of storage space on your PlayStation 5.” A ceiling in one document is a floor in the other, and only one reading satisfies both — the PlayStation build sits at the top of the range Rockstar is describing, so at least one Xbox model needs less than 212 GB. That is an inference drawn from two statements rather than a third statement, but it is the only one the two pages leave standing. It also finishes half of a question this site left open on 28 October, when the only number in public was a 210 GB scrape of the PlayStation Store backend and Xbox buyers had nothing at all. They now have a bound rather than a size, and the console that most needed the size is untouched: on a Series S, 212 GB is 58 per cent of a 364 GB drive, and 212 is now the most it can be.
The route that did not move is the one that costs the same. A code inside a box cannot be redeemed before the box is sold, so a retail buyer’s window runs from 12 November to 19 November — seven days, 168 hours, and 2.80 Mbit/s sustained to shift 212 GB. That is the figure this site published on 28 October as the requirement for everyone; it is now the requirement for one route only. The digital buyer’s two extra days lower it to 2.18 Mbit/s, or 2.32 in New Zealand on Xbox. None of those numbers tests a household line — 212 GB clears a 100 Mbit/s connection in 4.7 hours — and that is the point of them. The window is not sized to a connection, it is sized to an aggregate: Sensor Tower’s 3 November estimate of 7.71 million pre-orders, every one of which is a download because the box contains no disc, puts about 13.1 exabits through nine days, or roughly 17 Tbit/s sustained.
What the earlier date changes for a buyer is not the download but the exit. Sony’s pre-order terms allow a cancellation up to the release date “if you have not started to download the main part of the pre-order content (including pre-loading before release)”, and the same policy warns that downloads run automatically when auto-download is switched on. On a console left alone, the last clean day to cancel is now 9 November, which is where the 12 November this site has printed since 24 October went. Xbox Support’s Order history line closes at ten days before launch, also the 9th, so both platforms’ decision points land on one date for the first time in this campaign: a charge on one, a download on the other. Three things remain unpublished — the per-model Xbox size, whether the 212 GB already contains a day-one patch, which Eurogamer flagged as unknown on 28 October, and whether a console nobody touches will pull this particular pre-order on its own. The first decides whether a Series S owner can fit the game on the drive they already own.
