Where Is Vice City in Real Life?
What city is GTA6 set in?
GTA6 is set in Vice City, the fictional stand-in for Miami, inside the fictional state of Leonida — Rockstar's version of Florida. Vice City has meant Miami since the original 2002 game, but the GTA6 version is a modern-day Miami rather than the 1980s pastel version: condos, influencers, bodycams and the music industry instead of neon nostalgia.
One caveat worth stating up front, because most pages about this do not: Rockstar has never published an official inspiration map. The studio names and describes its regions on the GTA VI website, and it deliberately blends traits from several real places into each one. Everything below pairs a Rockstar-confirmed region with its most likely real-world counterpart, and marks how solid that pairing is.
Vice City vs Miami: the full mapping
| In GTA6 | Real-world counterpart | How solid |
|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Miami | The series' longest-running stand-in |
| Vice-Dale County | Miami-Dade County | Name pun; widely accepted |
| Ocean Beach | South Beach / Ocean Drive | Read from trailer and screenshot footage |
| Little Cuba | Little Havana | Reported from screenshots |
| VC Port | PortMiami | Rockstar's own copy calls Vice City the "cruise ship capital of the world" |
| Stockyard district | Wynwood arts district | Reported from trailer footage |
| Vice City Intl. Airport | Miami International (MIA) | Reported from trailer footage |
| Leonida Keys | Florida Keys | Rockstar-named region, described in its own copy |
| Grassrivers | Everglades National Park | Rockstar-named; the name translates the Everglades' nickname, "River of Grass" |
| Ambrosia | Lake Okeechobee sugar country (Clewiston) | Contested — see below |
| Port Gellhorn | Florida Panhandle "Forgotten Coast" | Contested — see below |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | North Florida / Georgia hill country | Contested — Florida is flat |
Is Port Gellhorn based on Tampa?
Probably not. The best-supported reading is Florida's Panhandle coast, not Tampa. The evidence is Rockstar's own wording: it describes Port Gellhorn as "Leonida's forgotten coast," and "Forgotten Coast" is a real, long-established name for the stretch of Gulf coastline around Apalachicola and Franklin County — roughly five hours' drive from Tampa by road.
Where the confusion comes from: Port Gellhorn is a working port town with heavy industry, and Tampa is the Florida city people know best for that. But Tampa is a major metropolitan area on the Gulf coast's central-west edge, while Rockstar's description is explicitly about decline — cheap motels, shuttered attractions, empty strip malls. That is the Forgotten Coast, not Tampa.
Other outlets have suggested Panama City Beach, which is also in the Panhandle and fits the faded-tourist-town reading. What is not in dispute is the direction: north and west of Vice City, away from the Miami analogue. Rockstar has not named the specific city, so treat any single answer here as analysis rather than fact.
Is GTA6 set in Florida?
Effectively yes, but never literally. Leonida is a fictional US state built as a parody of Florida, and Vice City sits inside it. Rockstar does not use real place names for its regions — it invents them and then rebuilds the recognisable features.
Leonida is a whole state rather than a single city, which is new for the series: past GTA maps were one metropolitan area with surrounding countryside. Leonida has six official regions Rockstar has named and described — Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park — spread from a Miami-style metropolis to sugar country, swamp and even mountains.
Is Vice City Miami or New York?
Miami. New York is covered by a different city in the same universe — Liberty City, which is where Lucia Caminos was born and raised before the events of GTA6.
The two get confused because both are veteran GTA settings, and because GTA6 moves Lucia from one to the other: her Liberty City background is part of why she arrives in Leonida as an outsider. The franchise's city-to-real-city shorthand is worth knowing — Liberty City is New York, Los Santos is Los Angeles, Vice City is Miami, and Leonida is Florida.
Why is GTA6's Vice City not the 1980s anymore?
Because Rockstar is satirising present-day Florida instead of revisiting its own nostalgia. The 2002 Vice City leaned on Miami Vice, pastel Art Deco and a synth soundtrack; GTA6's version keeps the architecture and the beachfront but swaps the era for social media, influencers, financial crime and the "Florida Man" news cycle. Rockstar's own one-line pitch for the state — "the darkest side of the sunniest place in America" — is aimed squarely at the modern version.
Practical upshot for players: if you are expecting a period piece you will be surprised. The Miami references are contemporary — glass condo towers and yacht marinas rather than neon motels, which is why the mapping table above pairs Vice City districts with modern Miami neighbourhoods like Wynwood rather than with 1980s landmarks.
How far apart are these places in real life?
One thing the game compresses heavily is distance. The real Florida geography behind Leonida is spread across the whole state, and the drive times are not small:
- Miami to Key West — around 4 hours, almost entirely on the Overseas Highway, the real version of the bridge chain that connects the Leonida Keys
- Miami to the Everglades — the closest part of the park is roughly an hour west of the city, which is why Grassrivers reads as a day trip rather than a separate world
- Miami to the Forgotten Coast (Apalachicola) — around 8 hours, across the state; this is the stretch behind Port Gellhorn
- Miami to Lake Okeechobee — around 2 hours north-west, the sugar country behind Ambrosia
GTA6 folds all of that into one contiguous map you can cross in minutes of gameplay. Fans have estimated the world at roughly 1.5 to 2 times the size of GTA5's map with 700-plus enterable interiors, but Rockstar has published no official size figure and only describes it qualitatively as its largest open world.
What else is confirmed about the map?
Beyond the real-world parallels, the practical details of exploring Leonida are covered in our location guides. The Vice City guide breaks down the confirmed districts, the Leonida Keys page covers the island chain and the bridges between them, and the full map and locations hub lists every region Rockstar has named.
